Iceland & the Faroe Islands have shown me how countries can harness their surroundings to generate electricity in renewable and environmentally-friendly ways. Iceland makes fabulous use of geothermal and hydroelectric power, while still protecting countless hot springs, geysers and waterfalls for public enjoyment. The Faroe Islands harness their seemingly limitless winds to power small towns at the edges of the many fjords in their 18-island archipelago. Saw it from the air on the flight in and just had to do the rocky marshy muddy sandy winding 3km (one way) hike to see it from the top in the same day. Oh then we got buzzed by a bird on the way back. It was a big black bird and it was territorial and it made three close passes and almost knocked off my hat and I was scared.

Yes this is underwater, in the some of the clearest water on the planet. Glacial meltwater is filtered over decades through layers of volcanic rock as the North American & Eurasian continental plates drift apart around us at 2cm per year. Trolls Hair algae waves lazily in the gentle current as we float along like big fat crab balloons in the 2°C water. Although your face goes numb it's clean and delicious enough to enjoy sips while you swim. Take that, salty ocean.
